African authors tend to write primarily in European languages, usually the colonial language of their country, so English, French, Portuguese, etc. However, which African language has most literature? Cheers I'm refering to sub-Saharan Africa.

I already know Spanish so I'd like a language that resembles Spanish the most. I'd also like to know what the advantages and difficulties are of both languages :) I know that Portuguese is spoken more than Italian but I don't really mind. Serious answers ONLY please
I posted this once but everyone was like: italiaaan (cause I'm an idiot from italy), so I'm posting it again :P Serious answers only please I already know Spanish so I'd like a language that resembles Spanish the most. I'd also like to know what the advantages and difficulties are of both languages :) I know that Portuguese is spoken more than Italian but I don't really mind.
Ok so, I'm half irish half italian. My mom is very dark skinned with black hair (like Eva longoria) and my dad is very light. the way the genes combined made me look light skinned, with dark eyes and black eye brows. I color my hair black. its naturally brown anyways alot of people think I'm Portuguese or Spanish ( and by that I mean SPANIARD. meaning from the country of SPAIN) and occasionally I'll receive told I look Brazilian or sometimes Lebanese anyways. Sometimes in conversation with people, if on the subject, I'll mention that alot of people confuse me for being Portuguese or Spanish. and alot of peoples reactions are sooo IGNORANT it disgusts me they typically say "SPANISH? god you dont look spanish you're too PALE to be spanish". ok first of every. why do people constantly think that "SPANISH" means everyone in the world who speaks spanish or comes from a spanish speaking country? Why does everyone think that in order to be "SPANISH" you must have extremley dark skin? Hello, I never said people thought I was Latin American, or Dominican or Ecuadorian, I freakin said SPANISH. which means SPANIARD which means from the country of SPAIN. which means you dont have to be as dark as a Puerto Rican. because Portuguese people are EUROPEAN. ahhhhh. it drives me nuts People assume that SPANISH means brazilian puerto rican dominican Mexican, etc etc. and it doesnt. yes they every talk the same language but Spanish is Spanish, meaning from SPAIN. just like Greeks are from Greece and Portugese are from Portugul Mexicans are not Spanish, THEY ARE MEXICANS Dominicans are not Spanish they are DOMINICAN! When are people going to start looking at Southern American and Central Americans being seperate from Spanish people instead of clumping them every together because they talk the same language sorry but had to rant!! :) feel much better now hahahaa. I am in no way offended to be clumped in with spanish speaking countries. I just find it so ignorant that people dont understand the differences between Spain and South and Central America. There are many light skinned Spaniards with dark hair like me. bcuz its in EUROPE. now central and south america tends to have much darker skin tones due to the fact that their ancestors mated with Natives. Its just ignorance that annoys me about people. thats every :) and to the girl who said she is half mexican and half italian the reason why youre not that dark is becuz your mixed. The italian genes probably lightened ur skin a bit. Mexicans are typically very dark. and dont call me a whore. thank you
So long story short I accidentally deleted my apfdlanguage.tmd file in aerofly and downloaded the replacement one suggested to me by a pal at their site to replace it... now everything is in Portuguese and i cannot find my install discs for apfd. a fellow rc enthusiast willing to post it for me at hotfile or rapidshare or something? just the language.tmd file nothing else. its found in the aerofly pro folder and I do not want to pay another 200 dollars to purchase a whole new set their support just said to reinstall it from disk or ask a pal with the program. It is legal and i have my serial and everything. 1xx83755 won't put whole thing of course. Long Live Radio Control sports! hooah!
Or do they every derive from Latin?
So a girl I work with is "collecting" different ways to say 'the toilet is on flame.' She knows English, Arabic, Portuguese, Ukrainian, Russian and Spanish. Can anyone provide the phonetic pronunciation of this phrase, so that I can pass it along? Thanks! By the way... I know it's really weird and random. But it's hilarious if you know her and the type of person she is. =)
I was thinking to learn German or Danish. I know Danish Swedish and Norwegian are intelligible is German also intelligible with these 3? NOTE Not every people that talk one can understand the other. Like Thai and Laos Portuguese and Spanish etc. Hmm. I KNOW about Swedish Danish and Norwegian... German is not inteligable but there is a lot of common vocab okay. I have European dictionaries for every 4 and I can look the vocab is extreamly similar some words on paper seem to be the same. I learn languages easily so passion for one is not of importants. I talk spanish and am able to understand much Italian because of it.. If you talk Danish I'd like your nice logical opinion please thanks.
i will be starting university soon to study spanish and have to chose an additional language to learn from scratch. my options are portuguese or catalan. which would you recommend?
Desi is a collective term for Indians, thus it's a new term, as Pakistanis are often thought as Desi Muslims and the creation of their state was influenced by Indian Muslim Nationalism (which initially was sparked by a reaction to the Ottoman Empire Collapse) But 15% of Pakistan are Pashtuns , and Pashtuns aren't Desi, they're considered Ethnic Afghans, like In Pakistan, if one knows Urdu, they'll understand Sindhi, Punjabi and Indo-Aryan languages but not Pashto, as a Spanish speaker may understand Catalan, Portuguese or another Romance language but not German, and Pashto isnt Indo-Aryan,it's classed as an Iranian language.
I've been trying to find out if there is anywhere on the Internet where I can learn a language, but literally learn the language, in which it really works. I've heard of that Rosetta rock and thought of getting it, but I want to be able to learn a language for free. The languages I would probably want to learn are either Portuguese (Brazil), Polish, and Italian. Please tell me if you have used whatever you have used and if it worked for you. Thanks.
I adore learning languages. I can already talk English, Spanish, Greek, and Portuguese and i want to learn another language. I have narrowed it down to French, Hindi, and Russian. I am planning on going into a job in international relations (hopefully in the UN0 and i need advice on which to pick. Please Help.
Especially similar-ish ones (spanish and portuguese). Or is this too ambitious?

The United States took over a lot of the Caribbean and Central American countries at the turn of the 20th century. We should have kept those. Also, when we conquered Mexico back int he 19th century we should have annexed it, instead of what we did do (install a friendly government). We also should have annexed every of South America and Central America, along with the Caribbean. It would be no different from now except the United States would be even bigger and better than it currently is. America is the best country ever without a doubt and the only super power left in the world. We would also help every of the suffering third-world countries in Central and South America (including Mexico). We could have used Manifest Destiny and eminent domain as justifications to completely take over the entire New World, with the possible exception of Canada since it was a British colony at the time and that may have sparked a third British-American War. Also, perhaps not Greenland since that could spark a war with Denmark. Of course, we would eventually annex Canada and Greenland too, but for them we may wait a while. I mean it would be no different from now. We would keep the regional names and languages of the territories we captured, but merely make them states. For instance Brazil would still be Brazil, and people there could still talk Portuguese as a regional language (but with English taught in schools as the primary language). We would also respect and honor the local cultures and ethnic groups of the land. Who else agrees that America should control the entire New World and that we should be one huge democratic country? Now, I'm not talking about a "New World Order" or any conspiracy theories, I'm talking about a good government, like the one currently have. One that is democratic and uses the Constitution. Perhaps in time we could even annex Europe, Asia, Africa, Oceania, and Antarctica. Also, I'm not necessarily saying that we should right now conquer the entire New World, but that is of course an option. I am merely implying that history should have been different. But also, in real life, I wish America does do this some day. And I wish we eventually control the entire Earth, and possibly even beyond the earth. We already control the world culturally, politically, and militarily. So why not control it territorially as well?
Hello, I am currently fluent in Spanish, Italian, English, and almost there w/ French. As a wanna-be linguist (I have no formal degree just foreign parents) I was wondering, when I finish French where should a well rounded linguist look next. I know Portuguese would be an easy pickup but I feel inundated with romance languages and covering some more ground on the earth (not just w. europe) would be nice. Any advice is welcome, I plan to learn languages my whole life so their is no specific reason for me to learn so any language is fair game. Thank you every!

So this girl I met is 2 years older than me (Im 18 she's 20) At first I was sure I had no chance but she was the one that initiated the conversation and gave me her number when we parted. I even ran into her mom at the mall and she was asking if im in touch with her daughter (weird lol) But anyway, I went on this long road trip and didnt talk to her for a week, then when i got back texted her in portuguese (her first language) and she replied, I texted back and then she just flat out ignored me and didnt answer... I was thinking maybe her battery died or she fell asleep or something but she hasnt responded since and i checked to verify that my text went through.... Any idea why she didnt answer? and should I try talking to her again? ( I dont wanna keep trying if she's not interested...i know how annoying it can be)

This course combination (double major) is what I'm considering following at university next year. I am New Zealand by citizenship, live in Australia and want a degree that I can add to with postgraduate qualifications in the humanities and also make use of being multilingual (a work in progress; I am learning Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese). Also I want to eventually live and establish my career in a Latin American country (I have a slight obsession with the continent, people, languages, history) I do not desire a position in politics, I rather prefer a "ground level" job working with the public in the real interests of the public and plan to take units in my studies related to international aid, development and multicultural studies. Currently thinking: translator, diplomat, international development worker, community development, sociologist. Can someone be my careers adviser and help me decide what to study? :) I understand knowledge about Westerners working in Latin America may be in short supply, but please tell me what you have. Thanks. STUPID ANSWER
I am graduated in Brazil (Education - Portuguese). I am graduate as a portuguese language teacher. Before people suggest me teaching, I don't feel the call. So, having a bachelor degree (without considering the major) would help find a good job here? Which nice of job could I have with this? could I have a good job without having to go to school again? I have great computer skills, type 65 words/ minute. If I have to use a software, I will learn how to use by myself because I am curious and obstinate. I am bilingual (Eng/ Port). Not many jobs for translators in my area... Career assessment show IT, but I did not want to have to study again. so... help!
Okay guys, I know that this stuff is pathetic but please, I'm in a tender spot right now and I just want honest, realistic answers. I'm a homeschooled student. Because of being homeschooled, I graduated a year early. I have this type of learning capability where I understand everything in theory, but during tests I just blank out. I got a 1440 on my SATs (I know. :[ ). Didn't take the ACTs. I plan to take the SAT Biology (I'm very good at biology). the online homeschooling program I am in is nationally accredited and after taking their sources, I received a GPA of 3.78 (eh) I'm hispanic, arrive from a low income single parent family, can talk 4 different languages (English, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese), are a public relations intern with a nonprofit organization called ITC that works with the disabled. I am in charge of designing their website and writing for their newsletters and promoting events, and I also am a volunteer for two other nonprofits. I honestly am a smart kid, but I just have a lot of trouble with being tested (not an excuse, just a reason). I can learn things very quickly (I was not schooled well in mathematics which caused such a low SAT score). My career interests include being a neuroscience researcher, a pharmacist, or a pediatrician. I don't really know what else I could possibly list for EC's, but I do adore cooking, painting, swimming, reading (especially classic literature), and writing. I adore every areas of psychology and neuroscience Please, I repeat, I really want nice, constructive criticism. 1) Do I have any chance at getting into a decent school? Liberal arts school or state university is what I mean by decent. 2) What do you suggest I add to my college applications that might be some sort of explanation for the low grades? 3) Any other thoughts/advice/input? PS-I was homeschooled for being very, very sick with mono, severe (unmedicated) bipolar disorder and anxiety, and gastrointestinal issues.

I want to work in the US Embassy in Brazil, but would i need to know Portuguese for this to be possible? And what type of jobs are available in US Embassy's?
and the portuguese in brazil forced them to learn portuguese and in haiti before the french went over there
I always hear English is the most spoken but they sometimes talk Spanish and Portuguese and french
I want to study other languages. I have a fascination with learning new languages, though I only talk one right now. I have been accepted into an intensive language school in Paris, France to learn French. And plan on learning Portuguese in Lisbon, Portugal at a later date. The day I received my acceptance letter, no one could wipe the grin off my face. I'm wondering, what careers - if any - involve foreign languages? Other than teacher and translator.
I talk portuguese and i'm learning english. I was very fantastic. Could you Answer me?
I really want to learn Portuguese.
I've answered again but i haven't really understand. The most say like spanish, soime others like slavic languages, some others like russian...some others like portuguese...if you had to campare our language with one language what could be?(in the sound i mean) I've also listened thay are veerrrryyy similar to maltese..i don't know...:P
i mean, in that part in which we hear walkies-talkies. I think it's Portuguese, yet I'm not sure.
French is easier than German and Portuguese. German is a very beautiful language. But, Portuguese is more important than others. Brazil is much more important, economically, than France and Germany. So, what should I learn? An easy learning language (French) A beautiful language (German) An important and useful language (Portuguese) Thank you.
The languages are portuguese, german and english if that helps .
I was at the theater speaking to the Box Officer (her name is Karla) and then, when I said I was from Brazil she started out speaking in Spanish (something like "Can you understand Spanish?")... instantly I answered "No... English is better". Why did she do that? I'm fluent in English, actually, I'm an English teacher in Brazil..... seriously I didn't understand why she did it. Of course, Spanish isn't my first language, my first language is Portuguese. I've lived in the US for many years and people say every the time my English is very good. You know, I felt terrible with this situation... of course, Spanish is an amazing language but unfortunately I don't talk it. I was not alone.... my American friends were with me and they didn't understand why the girl started out speaking in Spanish.
I just have a few questions to ask about college, and I feel like asking people who are either there or have been through it recently would help me the best. Here's the thing, I only want an associates degree (2 years), and I would like to major in a language, like French. 1- Do I have to take the extra classes like Chemistry and Calculus, etc, that I've already taken in high school? 2- Is it possible, because I really want to do this, to take multiple language classes, like a bonus Portuguese and maybe Italian class? (This corresponds in a way with the question over; I wouldn't like doing this if I had to take other classes). 3- Are there colleges with little requirements for classes, so you basically pick your possess? 4- Can I receive this every at a community college? I want to be a flight attendant, internationally I wish, and I think having even just an associates degree and a few languages below my belt will help significantly. Thank you!
I'm asking this on the martial arts section just to make this forum exciting and less empty but anyways... The funniest thing that ever happened to me is when my pal cursed out some bully in THREE different languages (he's black, Hispanic, Japanese and Brazilian, wierd huh, his dad is an Afro-Brazilian and his mom is half Japanese and half hispanic). It was so silly that I can't even explain it in words, he cursed the dude out in Japanese, Spanish, Portuguese, and ended it with "Now receive your puto culo out of my face" LOL XD. What was the funniest thing that happened to you? Also this is just a fun question. @muaythaiguy Took me a long time to state the funniest thing I've seen too.
im just wondering between french spanish portuguese italian and romanian which one wound be the most difficult to learn for an english speaker.
I am interested in taking a language on, i would like to receive a gcse in a language such as maltese or Portuguese, how do i go about doing this? I should mention i am 15 years of age and so i would like to take the course out of school, with that being said, thank you in advance.
Oeste is the Portuguese word for "west." Now, the Latin word is "occidens," but I feel that the Portuguese word, as well as the equivalent term used in many other modern Italic languages is much more Germanic. I'm wondering if perhaps "oeste" can be traced back to the Germanic groups which dominated the Iberian peninsula, as well as much of Europe, in the period following the fall of Rome, in which the Romance languages began to grow distinct from Latin Vulgate. I read on a Spanish website that "oeste" derives directly from the English "west," but I find this difficult to believe, considering how it's also reflected in other Romance languages. It seems more likely to me that each Romance language inherited the word from an earlier West, or East Germanic language. A few comparisons: Portuguese (Ibero-Romance): oeste Spanish (Ibero-Romance): oeste Catalan (Ibero-Romance): oest French (Gallo-Romance): ouest Italian (Italo-Dalmatian): ovest Romanian (Eastern Romance): vest (note that the voiced labial-velar approximant cannot be denoted by a single letter in any of these Romance languages) German (West Germanic): westen Old High German (West Germanic): westar Dutch (West Germanic): west Norwegian (North Germanic): vest Swedish (North Germanic): vaster I think it's safe to assume that the Proto-Germanic was something like *westan. I don't know the Proto-Indo-European, but I think that neither "occidens," nor "westar" are from the PIE root for west, considering that no other branch of the Indo-European family (to the best of my knowledge) commonly uses a native word resembling either. It should also be noted that both Spanish and Portuguese contain direct derivatives of "occidens" as well as this more Germanic word. (occidente, and ocidental, respectively)
I want to know what are the benefits of knowing more than 1 language, and does it help your memory? For example: I am almost multilingual, I am fluent in Spanish, English, German, and I read and somewhat talk Portuguese, being the first in my family to do so, but yet somehow my family is not impressed. I want to prove to my family that knowing more than 1 language can be beneficial, but I need a list, so anyone please help?? Danke!
which sounds the most unpleasant? As for me.. French, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Farsi & Japanese sounds the most pleasant and Finnish and German the most unpleasant.
I like this book. It's one of those language reference books for a foreign language and its good. I'm studying Portuguese. I couldn't recheck it because someone else has it on hold. :( I'm unhappy. I have every my sticky notes and notes in the book. For the cross: alt+0134
Just as Serbian, Croatian and Bosnian were merged into Serbo-Croatian in Yugoslavia. Of course, no one would want it and there is no political will for it to happen, but could it be done?
I'm an 18 year old South African and I need to learn a new language (from scratch) over the next 2 year to apply for college. I have to pick between Spanish, German French and Russian (have to take them at A-Level after wards) then I can pick to learn conversational Italian, Portuguese, and Modern Greek if I want to. I also have an option of learning Celtic and Czech. I have a maximum of 28 months to learn one of them. I talk English fluently as a second language and moderate Afrikaans and Tswana (one of the official languages of SA) is my first language. I am also a film student so i want a language that, not only will I learn quite easily, but one that I can use better as an artist.
Hello, Anyone happens to know that how many languages does Martha Argerich, the legendary Argentine pianist speaks? I know and I have heard her speaking English, French, Spanish, Italian, German and Portuguese. But I've heard that she speaks more languages. How many totally? Thank you
